Tribe visits Kia Island

The Tribe were privileged to visit nearby Kia island last week. Kia rises from the horizon as you look north-west from Vorovoro and has enticed many visiting tribe members. As boat captain Api delivered us to his childhood home we were stunned by the abundance of wildlife and smooth sandy beaches. We presented Sevusevu to Api’s father and he welcomed us into his island community. We toured the village, shared lunch, kava and stories with the locals. All too soon the day trip was over as the tide was changing. As we powered back home the sunset was spectacular and the moonrise was equally amazing as it drifted from behind Vorovoro.

My month as Tribe Wanted resident Vorovoro Chief has come to an end. As I reflected on my experience it resonated that Tui Mali and the local people have continually put a great deal of trust and energy into this transient global community and the project as a whole. Without this friendly, nurturing and generous support I doubt visitors to Vorovoro would feel so attached to this beautiful island in the Pacific.
